Clubs and Activities

Acceptance Club
This is a club that is anti-hate, ant-racist club that supports LGBTQIA+ students and allies and focuses on sharing: resources, literature, news, history and doing activities that welcoming to all students.  Club Advisor:  Ms. Andres  candres@d131.org

Art Club
Art club allows students to develop their creative side through exploration of different mediums, learning new skills and having fun with friends. Art club meets once a week from 3:15-4:15 PM. Club teacher: Mr. Mueller  kmueller@d131.org

Band (6th, 7th, 8th)
A FULL YEAR class that meets every day of the week during school hours.  The class consists of daily rehearsals, home practice, playing quizzes, and performances. In Band, students learn to make music together by listening to each other and developing their own musical skill. Students improve their skills by playing scales, breathing properly, articulating, and counting correctly. Students in Band will develop their skills as a musician, as a music reader, and learn about musical styles, composers and cultures. The bands performs throughout the school year at Simmons and other district events.  Teacher:  Mr. Stade estade@d131.org 

Cooking Club
Join other students to learn new recipes, practice recipes, discuss cooking tips, and enjoy the activity of cooking together.  Cooking club meets twice a month throughout the school year from 2:45 – 4:00.  Club Advisor:  Ms. Canda  mcanda@d131.org

Drama Club
A process-oriented after-school theater club in which students learn the tools of imaginative play, listening and observation skills and self confidence. This culminates in creating sketches, rehearsing a play and other performance opportunities.  Drama club starts in the fall and end culminates in the performance of a play.  The talent shows is organized by drama club.  Club Advisor: Mr. Curtis   ecurtis@d131.org

Eco Club
Eco Club is and after school club for Simmons staff or students interested in caring for the earth. We will garden and work toward creating earth-friendly practices at Simmons. Eco Club meets every other Thursday in Room 315 from 3:15 – 5 PM. Club Advisor:  Ms. Andres  candres@d131.org

Guitar Club
Hang out and jam with other students in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. Students at any level of experience are welcome to participate. Students will be exposed to playing rock, classical, Latin and other styles of music. Students whom don’t own a guitar may be able to rent/borrow a guitar a from the school.  The club typically meets on Wednesdays after school.  Club Advisor:  Mr. Stade estade@d131.org

Jazz Band
An extra curricular ensemble open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band students. Jazz band rehearses on Wednesdays after school.   Jazz Band performs at school concerts, and other district events. In Jazz Band students are exposed to swing, rock, Latin jazz, and other styles of music through listening and playing. Students will also be exposed to improvisation through listening and playing.  Club Advisor:  Mr. Stade  estade@d131.org

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)
NJHS is a society that works together to learn leadership skills and give back to the neighboring and school community.  Students are eligible to join based on their academic GPA, a completed application, and a faculty recommendation. The next round of open applications will be in April of 2024.  Club Advisor:  Mr. Toman  etoman@d131.org

Newspaper Club
We write about activities, events, field trips and many of the other exciting things happening at Simmons Middle School.  Stories are published in The Panther News, which can be read online and from the cabinet outside of the main office. We meet on Thursdays in the library from 2:45 to 3:45. Club advisor is Ms. Cox at mcox@d131.org

Peace Jam
We will meet weekly to learn about people that have worked or are still working to make this world a better place and have won the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of their hard work.  We will do some of our own service projects so we can make our part of the world a little better as well!  Club Advisor:  Ms. Johnson ajohnson03@d131.org

Poetry Club
Are you interested in writing stories, poetry, fan fiction, rap?  This is a creative writing club that publishes students’ creative writing at the end of the year. Poetry, short stories, fan fiction, rap. Be ready to write! Everyone is welcome..  Come join us every Wednesday after school in Ms. Andres’ room 315, from 3:15 – 5pm.  Club Advisor:  Ms. Andres  candres@d131.org

Technology/STEM Club
The Technology/STEM Club encourages students to problem solve and work together as they explore the Engineering Design Process to design, build and test solutions to problems. Students will also learn beginning programming skills.  Club Advisor:  Ms. Ward  lward@d131.org

Student Council
Student Council is a student-based organization designed to help promote school spirit and leadership among students. Students participating in all levels of the Council will maintain a high standard of personal conduct. We do a variety of philanthropic activities, as well as supporting the community and school. Our main goal each year is to “give back” and help students understand the rewards of doing things for others.  Join us to spread kindness and positivity throughout our school and community.  Club Advisors:  Ms. Gear  cgear@d131.org and Ms. Cornelisson  ccornelisson@d131.org
